What is observerhood?
Observerhood names the structured condition of a bounded system that must model, remember, repair and act under constraint.
Observerhood is not used here as a synonym for consciousness, nor as a passive act of looking. It names a structured condition: a bounded system must maintain a usable model of itself and its world while acting under constraint.
What makes it an observer
An observer is not merely exposed to information. It must select, compress, remember, interpret and repair. It must distinguish enough of itself from enough of its environment to remain coherent across time.
Why Volume I begins there
Volume I begins with observerhood because later work on life, intelligence, memory, physics or collective systems needs a clear account of how modelling systems hold together under pressure.
